How do I get to Sandy Run Regional Park?

South of Washington DC: To reach Sandy Run, take I-95 south of the Beltway(South of Springfield, Virginia and North of Fredericksburg Virginia), exit at Lorton Road, turn right on Lorton, turn right on Furnace Road, right again on Ox Road (Route 123), left on Hampton Road, turn left on Van Thompson and follow it to the park entrance.

PLEASE NOTE: There is extensive roadwork being conducted on ROUTE 123. Also, upon arriving at the park you will be asked to pay a park entrance fee.

Where can I park?

We offer preferred parking to athletes but do provide excellent parking within the park. We strongly recommend you safely carpool as the the park charges a ten dollar entrance fee. When you arrive at the park, you will be asked to park at one of 5 parking lots. Each lot is within a 2-3 minutes of the start and finish lines which are located at right next to Sandy Run Boathouse 1.

Anything I cant do at this park? Please make sure to follow these IMPORTANT RULES:

  • Pets are not allowed in the park on regatta days. The only exceptions are animals trained to assist individuals with disabilities. At all other times, pets must be on a leash.
  • No one may cook food in the park. There are NO exceptions to this.
  • State law prohibits alcoholic beverages.
  • The Occoquan Reservoir is a public water supply. There is no swimming or cox tossing allowed. Violators are subject to disqualification, fines and ejection from the park.

Where can I view the races?

The Occoquan Challenge has one of the most exciting venues to watch a fall head race. Unlike other races, the starting line AND finish line are at the same location allowing spectators to get a complete view of the action. We encourage visitors to bring chairs to watch the action from the bottom of the hill at Sandy Run Regional Boathouse Number 1. There is normally a large beach area that allows you to see crews coming off the finish line and starting the race.

Want to see even more of the race? Next to boathouse 1 there is a trail that will allow spectators and even more spectacular view of the race. It requires about 15-20 minutes along a fairly "hilly" trail that will bring you to the finish line of the SPRING season 2000m course. At this location, you can see over 3000 meters of the course and get about 20 feet away from the competitors. Bring good walking shoes for this trek.
